Lunchtime for Gaza
July 29th, 2010A joint initiative from the Jewish Socialists’ Group and JFJFP
Ivor Dembina, a member of the JSG and a signatory of JFJFP has organized a benefit show at his year’s Edinburgh fringe to raise humanitarian relief for the people of Gaza. Ivor tells us that he has assembled an extremely strong line-up (including three Jewish performers) and that a sell-out is an absolute certainty. He’s asked us to point out if you will be in Edinburgh, or have friends up there who want to attend, tickets should be purchased as soon a possible directly from the venue’s web site (see below).
Also, throughout the Festival Ivor will also be presenting a revised version of his own remarkable solo show about the conflict entitled ‘This is Not a Subject for Comedy’. It’s free to get in with a voluntary donation at the end of the show (again details below).

‘Ivor’s New Show’
June 16th, 2010An experiment
It took me over five years to complete my current solo show ‘This is Not A Subject for Comedy’. I want to write the next one in three weeks.
To speed things up a bit, I plan to develope the new show’s content by joining forces with others who’d like to take part in the writing process. The obvious way to do this is through performance.
So I’ll conduct an experiment at this year’s Edinburgh fringe where each day groups of people enter the performance space and wait to be entertained. My aim is for the entertainment to arise out of the their interaction with me and each other.
The shows will be creative sessions in which complete strangers will be encouraged to contribute their own thoughts and ideas. It’ll be my job to the lead the sessions and to assimilate all the stuff that comes up into a freshly devised whole.
If you’re up in Edinburgh this year I hope you’ll can get along to at least one of the sessions.
Full details about the run can be found here and for those who want to contintinue their involvement after they’ve been along there’ll be a Facebook group.
Hope to see you there.
Back from Brighton
May 16th, 2010Thanks to everyone who came to see me perform in Brighton at the Festival Fringe earlier in the month. I greatly enjoyed the four-night run of ‘This is Not a Subject for Comedy’.
I was also pleased and surprised by the large numbers who showed up for the impromptu performances of ‘Old Jewish Jokes’ with Lewis Schaffer and Lynne-Ruth Miller. The response to this ‘traditional celebration of Jewish humour’ were encouraging enough to persuade me to try out the idea in London. So, on Sunday 6 June, I’ll be joined by Lewis again, this time along with Arnold Brown and Sol Bernstein. It happens at the Hampstead Comedy Club.
